Remember to keep your backyard Dog Safe!
You like to relax in your backyard in the summer time. Grilling, volleyball, horseshoes are just some of
the fun things for people to enjoy. Your pet probably likes to roam the backyard as well. Making sure
fences are secure by burying chicken wire under the fence line or line the base of the fence with heavy
rocks or cinder blocks will help to keep your “Houdini” from escaping.
Privacy fencing made from wood and about 6ft tall are ideal. It obscures your dog’s view of cats in the
neighborhood or doesn’t allow other potentially harmful animals to enter your backyard. Electronic
fences are nice, but it doesn’t keep out cats, dogs and other animals from entering. The shock from
those types of fences can make a dog afraid to go outside.
Make sure you check the toxicity of all the plants first before planting them in your backyard. Some
springtime flowers like daffodils or crocuses can make your dog sick, if ingested. Check with your
veterinarian or the ASPCA before you purchase your plants. Watch out for where you put toxic insecticides or
herbicides, mulch containing coca beans or toxic fertilizers. Make sure to keep them away from where your
dog eats or plays. Gardening tools and power cords for tools can be “dangerous” chew toys for dogs. During
the summer your pet can over heat. Make sure there is shade and lots of water available at all times in your
backyard to keep you dog and cats safe. Heat exhaustion can affect cats and dogs too.
Our dedicated Doctors are committed to providing you and your pet with the very best animal
care and veterinary services possible at a fair and reasonable price. Our skilled support staff of
veterinary technicians and assistants are experienced in helping our veterinarians with the most
complicated and demanding medical and surgical procedures. Quality patient care and client
satisfaction are our top priorities. Brookeside Veterinary Hospital offers you and your pet the
